Society Hill Row
A narrow 1790 row house, opened to its garden.
Three floors, eighteen feet wide, and a courtyard that had not been touched since the Nixon administration.
The house had been in the same family since 1968 and showed every bit of it. We preserved the original stair, the pine floors, and two working fireplaces. Everything else came out.
The courtyard became the organizing idea. Every room now looks toward it — a habit the original builders clearly intended and the twentieth century had mostly forgotten.

Parlor
"The courtyard was always the protagonist. We just gave it the floor."
